16th West Virginia Infantry

HISTORY
The Sixteenth West Virginia Infantry was organized and mustered into service
October 25, 1862, with the following field officers: James T. Close, colonel;
Samuel W. Snider, lieutenant-colonel; and Bernard C. Armstrong, major. The
regiment served in the defenses of Washington during its term of service,
in January, 1863, under Brig.-Gen'l R. Cowdin, afterwards in Col. Burr Porter's
brigade. In April, 1863, was attached to the brigade of Colonel Tannatt.
May 31, 1863, in General De Russy's brigade.

Organized at Washington, D. C, August and September, 1862. Attached to
Abercrombie's Division, Defences of Washington, D.C., to February, 1863.
2nd Brigade, Abercrombie's Division, 22nd Army Corps, to April, 1863. 2nd
Brigade, DeRussy's Division, 22nd Army Corps, Defences South of the Potomac,
to June, 1863.
SERVICE.--On duty in the Defences of Washington, D.C.. north and south of
the Potomac, during entire term. Mustered out June 10, 1863.
