The guidebook is 143 pages, with 43 full color maps, photographs, and sketches. Printed on heavyweight glossy paper, spiral bound, and with color tabs for each day tour, the guide is designed for easy use by the tourist. The guide contains complete driving directions, historical descriptions and analysis, and human interest highlights.
The First Day Tour covers the struggle in 1861-1862 to control the Kanawha and lower New River Valley. The stops include The New River Gorge National Park, Hawks Nest State Park, Gauley Bridge, Falls of the Kanawha, Kessler's Cross Lanes, Carnifex Ferry State Park, Spy Rock, Sewell Mountain, and Fayetteville.
The Second Day Tour focuses on the struggles from 1862-1865 to control the northeast flank of the New River Valley and the raids conducted by both sides. Stops include Meadow Bluff, Tuckwiller Hill, Lewisburg, Caldwell Bridge, White Sulphur Springs, Huntersville, and Droop Mountain State Park.
The Third Day Tour examines the climactic struggles to control the strategic assets in the upper New River Valley 1862-1865. Stops include the Clark house skirmish, Battle of Pigeon Roost, Princeton, Giles Court House, Cloyd's Mountain, Radford, Cove Mountain, Toland's Raid, Wytheville, and the Battles for Saltville.
